Treatment

Many people suffer from feeling different, or struggling to fit in. This can be painful not only for them but also for those around them. When we understand that our brains work in such different ways; where simple things for some are immensely challenging for others, we can then begin to build a more accepting society. We believe this understanding can transform lives; from parents and friends, to the ‘different’ ones themselves. This film aims to spark that change; opening our eyes to the beauty and strength of neurodiverse minds.

In Society most people have very little understanding of what neurodiversity is… We hear terms such as ASD, ADHD, Dyslexia, Autism, OCD: but there is stigma attached and a negative association of these terms as ‘disabilities’. This social narrative needs to change.

This is a film of real-life stories, expert insights, and parallel animated adventures to help us navigate complex subject matters. The Different Ones celebrates the beauty of being "neuro-sparkly": a little weird, a little wild, and full of creativity. This is a heartfelt journey that will make you laugh, cry, and see how anyone who has ever felt different can rise, grow, and ultimately thrive.
Picture
The Different Ones will be as wild, unpredictable, and wonderfully unique as neurodivergent minds themselves. Creativity knows no bounds here, everything goes! We’ll mix animated characters with traditional interview storytelling… and a narrator may jump in unexpectedly to add humour and insight.

Visuals will be layered and alive. We’ll weave animation into interview and live-action footage; with a rhythm that shifts from action-packed intensity, to deeply emotional moments, to quirky, laugh-out-loud scenes. The experience will be an ever-changing journey, keeping viewers guessing and embracing the wonderfully diverse, colourful, and unexpected world of neurodivergence.

The story unfolds through three kinds of characters: Real people sharing personal journeys, expert interviews for deeper neuroscientific insights, and animated characters from a fictional world; bringing fun and adventure to the story. Together, these perspectives provide a full view of the challenges and strengths of neurodiversity.

Storylines

The Film will intertwine two storylines, each portrayed with distinct techniques, yet echoing the story arc. One storyline follows four fictional animated characters. Their story is vibrant, filled with action, humour, metaphor andimagination, and embodying the spirit of resilience and adventure.

Introduction / The Challenge
A Look BackThe True Enemy / Exterior EnemyWho They AreThe world often sees being "different" as a problem. For our heroes, their unique ways ofthinking and perceiving don’t seem like super-powers. Instead, it can feel like a burden, a misunder-standing of their true potential.

Who They Are
To understand our heroes, we first need to understand what it means to be neurodivergent. With warmth and honesty, we’ll explore how their minds work uniquely, how they see the world, and why this can also be such a powerful gift.

A Look Back
Throughout history, neurodivergent individuals have made extraordinary contributions and faced challenges that most wouldn’t imagine. We’ll glimpse both the triumphs and struggles of neurodivergent heroes in the past, setting the stage for our story.

The True Enemy / Exterior Enemy
The real challenge isn’t the neurodivergent mind itself. It’s the world around them—a society that sometimes fears what it doesn’t understand, wanting everyone to fit the same mould. Here, we uncover how misunderstanding can become an invisible villain.

The Mask / Interior Enemy
To fit in, many of our heroes have learned to hide their true selves, blending in just to be accepted. But behind that “mask,” they’re forced to suppress the very things that make them special, which can lead to confusion, loneliness, or even harm.

The Enemy Gains Ground
When the world refuses to understand, it can feel overwhelming and isolating for our heroes. They may turn in on themselves, We’ll see the heartbreaking consequences that come when neurodivergent people feel forced to remain unseen or unheard.

Meeting the Mentor
Every hero needs a guide. Along their journey, our heroes meet compassionate mentors; doctors, friends, family, and teachers, who recognize their unique worth and help them understand their strengths. These allies provide guidance, support, and a glimpse of the self-love our heroes need.

The Inner Battle
Armed with the tools and insights from their mentors, our heroes face their greatest struggle: the courage to remove the mask, reveal their true selves, and embrace who they are. It’s a fight for self-acceptance, a chance to be seen as they truly are.

A Better World
With bravery, our heroes begin to flourish. And as they do, they show the world the beauty of neurodiversity. We end with a hopeful message, exploring how life is richer, kinder, and more inclusive when Neurodivergents and Neurotypicals understand and uplift each other.

Audience

General public of all ages, educators, families of neurodivergent individuals, and professionals working with neurodivergent populations.

This film is for anyone curious about neurodiversity, or for those who have loved ones and friends with diagnosis. It’s also for anyone who has ever felt different, like they don’t quite fit in. You don’t need a diagnosis or any prior understanding of neurodivergence to feel connected. This film is here to show that being different is not only okay… it’s powerful, and worth celebrating. It’s there to offer neurodivergent individuals a representation onscreen. It should offer empowerment, and something to truly connect with.
