Live visuals

The mola is a multilayered textile art form and metaphor for the story of the Guna, indigenous people from Panama. We created this video for a museum in this country where we wanted the audience to be immersed in the Mola’s dreamlike universe.

The mola art is practiced by all the women in the Guna community. It not only depicts their artistic and naturalistic knowledge but also their deepest representations of their culture, their history and their relationships with the western world.

During 3 different moments we are transported between the physical and the spiritual world of the Guna:

The Forest

The male seers or Shamans burn cacao seeds that lead them to a mystical world where they see the spiritual beings that are represented in the molas. Only the estetical, descriptive or emotional moments are worthy to be shown in the molas.

Abstract world

The Gunas associate the image of a maze with the idea that men, vegetation and animals are constantly reunited through complex paths. They show the connection between the species and their surroundings.

Tangible world

The mola art frequently shows unique and symmetrical designs. They help the Guna community to express a supernatural world in a tangible and colorful way.
